Objectives of the team

Research on preparedness for and response to outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics with vaccine and immunization

Description of research and development by the team

1. 1develop a system to globally monitor and rapidly detect outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics and timely generate and share epidemic intelligence with institutions concerned
2. 2specify major factors contributing to epidemiologic characteristics of large-scale human-to-human transmission of new infectious pathogens in Japan and forecast epidemiology of a future large-scale epidemic of new infectious pathogen in Japan
3. 3prepare a vaccine action plan for responding to a large-scale outbreak of a new infectious pathogen in Japan
4. 4develop and conduct programmes for human resource development for preparedness for and response to outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics with vaccine and immunization

Tasks of the team

1. 1-1collection, compilation and summarization of information and data on communicable diseases from open sources over the world using an interpreted high-level general-purpose programming language and artificial intelligence
2. 1-2development of a system to conduct situation analysis and risk assessment on public health events potentially causing large-scale outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics
3. 2-1conduct of spatiotemporal epidemiologic analysis on the COVID-19 virus transmission in Japan 2020-2023 and identification of major factors characterizing COVID-19 epidemiology in Japan
4. 2-2development of mathematical models on large-scale human-to-human transmission of new infectious pathogens in Japan
5. 3-1clarification of steps to be taken from the detection of human-to-human transmission of a new infectious pathogen to the development of a vaccine to be used for response to the next pandemic
6. 3-2preparation of an Osaka University Emergency Vaccine Action Plan
7. 4promotion of partnership and collaboration with institutions concerned to develop and conduct programmes for human resource development for preparedness for and response to outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics with vaccine and immunization
